Evaluation of Signage Alternatives for Express Lane Facilities

Project Description:

The main objective of this project is to determine the optimal amount of information to display and the manner in which the information is communicated to drivers to ensure a safe and effective operation of express lane facilities. The research will help prioritize the types of information to include and how best to display the information, including sign layout, sign placement, and, in the case of multiple sequential signs, spacing and order of sign display. This research will produce specific recommendations on the prioritization of contents to be displayed and the proper design and placement of signs for safe and effective express lane operations.

Final Report:

  2. July 2014
  3. January 2016
Describe Implementation of Research Outcomes (or why not implemented) :

The final report will be disseminated to agencies currently operating express lanes. The results will be presented in journal papers to add to the literature and be potentially considered for implementation by agencies and for adoption in MUTCD.

Impacts/Benefits of Implementation (actual, not anticipated):

The implementation of the research results are expected to improve safety on the increasing number of managed lanes around the country.
