International impact

Under the leadership of UCF's Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Aty, the second International Symposium on Traffic Safety was held at Tongji University in Shanghai, China on May 19, 2013. The Symposium included the top safety researchers in Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and the US including Andrew Tarko, Jürgen Follmann, Klaus Habermehl, Lena Nilsson, Simon Washington, Takashi Oguchi, and Tarek Sayed.

UCF's Dr. Essam Radwan was invited by the Associate Dean of the School of Traffic and Transportation at Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) to deliver a four-day short course on traffic engineering and management to a group of undergraduate and graduate students. This activity is part of a newly created project for “Discipline Innovation Wisdom Base” (also named as “111” Project) themed at Rail Traffic Control and Safety. The initiative was granted by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs in China. Members of this project will participate in International conferences hosted by BJTU, participate in workshops of the “111” Project, organize individual seminars, teach short/long term courses, utilize BJTU facilities to conduct specific research projects and result in co-publications with students and faculties at BJTU.

Dr. Abdel-Aty was invited by Prof. Helai Huang, the director of Urban Transport Research Center of CSU, to visit Central South University, China, to make two presentations: Topic 1: Current Traffic Safety Research Initiatives and the Future Opportunities for Practice; Topic 2: Visibility Warning Systems for the Safety of Highways.

Drs. Mohamed Abdel-Aty and Essam Radwan from the University of Central Florida attended the Road Safety on Four Continents (RS4C) conference held in Beijing, China, May 15-17, 2013. They collectively presented three papers, displayed a poster, and chaired two sessions. The conference allowed experts, decision makers, practitioners and other delegates with an interest in road safety development to come together in fruitful discussions and exchange of information in all different aspects of Road Safety. Mr. Ronjgie Yu, a Ph.D. candidate under Aty’s supervision, also attended the conference and presented a paper.
